This time we focus next on Little Notes, an early years music programme showing that the benefits of making music together can extend far beyond the music session itself.
Building connections through music
Throughout 2025/26, Coventry Music has been delivering weekly music-making sessions for children aged 0–5 and their families, working in partnership with Coventry City Council's Early Years Team, Family Hubs and Coffee Tots.
Across Woodside Family Hub, Park Edge Family Hub and Coffee Tots, around 45 families have taken part during the academic year.
Through singing, movement, rhythm and shared musical play, Little Notes gives young children opportunities to develop their communication, confidence and creativity. Regular participation has helped children recognise familiar songs and musical patterns, explore their voices and learn how to choose and play different instruments.
But the impact has reached beyond children's musical development.
The sessions have provided a welcoming and supportive environment where parents and carers can meet, build friendships and share experiences. For some families, these connections have continued outside the sessions, helping to reduce social isolation and create valuable informal support networks within the community.
One parent explained just how important those connections had become:
"I met my best friend at this group and we even had Christmas dinner together. We are both single mums and would have been on our own with no other adult company."
Regular attendance and repeat participation have helped create a real sense of belonging, while children and adults alike have grown in confidence through making music together.
The next stage of Little Notes will build on this success, with plans to reach more families and continue developing partnerships with early years settings, Family Hubs and community organisations. Coventry Music also hopes to support more practitioners and musicians to develop the skills and confidence to provide high-quality, inclusive musical experiences for young children.
Little Notes demonstrates how making music together can support a child's earliest development while also creating friendships, strengthening families and building connections within our communities.
