As our Coventry Music case study series continues, our third story celebrates the power of partnership, performance and inclusion through the inaugural Heart of England Music Festival.
The first Heart of England Music Festival
Spring 2026 saw a milestone moment for the region as more than 300 young people came together for the first ever Heart of England Music Festival.
The festival showcased an incredible 19 Music Hub partner groups, giving young musicians from across Coventry and the wider area the opportunity to perform, celebrate each other's achievements and experience being part of a much larger musical community.
Coventry Music was represented by a number of groups, alongside performances and contributions involving partners including Solihull Music, Warwickshire Music, Aspire Arts, Positive Youth Foundation, TIN Music and Arts, SPARK Youth Music, LAMP, Coventry College and Coventry Youth Orchestra.
A moment to remember
One of the standout performances came from Phoenix Rising, Coventry Music's band for young people in care.
The group delivered a fantastic performance, but it was their contribution beyond the music that made the occasion particularly special. When interviewed on stage, the young musicians spoke about their experiences and shared inspirational messages with the audience.
Across the festival, young people demonstrated growing confidence, ensemble and performance skills while having an opportunity to see and hear the work of their peers.
For many, it wasn't simply about performing. It was an opportunity to belong, be heard and celebrate what young people can achieve through music.
Creating opportunities through partnership
The success of the inaugural festival demonstrated what can be achieved when organisations work together to create inclusive opportunities for young musicians.
The response from performers and partners has been overwhelmingly positive, with plans already developing for the 2027 Heart of England Music Festival.
The festival is also creating new progression opportunities. DJs involved in the COV/Coventry Music programme are set to progress to the Live on Stage Gig Night, providing another platform for young people to develop and showcase their talents.
The first Heart of England Music Festival brought hundreds of young people together through music, giving them a platform to perform, connect and inspire one another. Most importantly, it put young people's creativity and voices centre stage.
