Our 4th case study celebrates an inspiring 1st year for the Sherbourne Fields Open Orchestra, where accessible & inclusive music-making is helping young people discover new skills and build confidence

Breaking down barriers through music

The 2025/26 academic year marked the resurgence of Open Orchestras at Sherbourne Fields School, delivered in partnership with Coventry Music.

The programme has been designed around the individual needs of the young people involved, combining one-to-one sessions, small-group learning and larger ensemble rehearsals. Eight young musicians across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 have taken part in weekly sessions.

For some, an important part of the journey has been simply discovering the instrument that works for them. By adapting the musical experience to individual needs, young people have been able to overcome barriers to participation and find their own way to make music.

Growing in confidence

Over the course of the year, the development of the group has been remarkable.

Some young musicians have discovered "their" instrument, while others have progressed to become confident members and leaders within the ensemble. Music-making has also helped young people overcome significant anxiety and develop skills that extend far beyond learning an instrument.

Playing as part of an orchestra has encouraged the group to listen to one another, develop patience, work collaboratively and understand how their individual contribution becomes part of something much bigger.

Weekly reflections have helped track the progress of each young person throughout the programme, with one teacher commenting:

"I never in a million years thought she'd be able to do that!"

It is a simple statement that captures just how powerful the experience has been.

Creating more opportunities

The success of the first year opens up exciting possibilities for the future.

Plans could include involving more children, developing after-school opportunities and helping school staff build their own musical skills. The programme also has the potential to provide valuable learning opportunities for Coventry Music tutors who want to develop their experience of inclusive music-making and working with children with disabilities.

Through the partnership between Sherbourne Fields School, Open Orchestras and Coventry Music, young people are being given the opportunity not simply to take part in music, but to progress, lead, collaborate and experience the achievement of creating something together.

The first year of Sherbourne Fields Open Orchestra has shown what can happen when barriers are removed and every young musician is given the opportunity to participate in a way that works for them.
